Motorways

At last the government have decided to consider the idea of allowing Learner drivers on the motorway before they pass. It has always seemed a ‘no brainer’ to me.

At the moment, I am not allowed to take learners on the motorway, but as soon as they have passed, they are allowed on there by themselves. Surely, it would be safer for a learner to have an instructor next to them the first time they drove on a motorway.

Even though motorways are our safest roads, they can feel anything but safe to a newly qualified driver heading down the slip road for the first time to join a fast-moving, often heavy, flow of traffic.

Many are so intimidated by the motorway environment that they choose instead to use statistically more dangerous roads.

The lessons are not going to be mandatory, but they would have to be with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled vehicle.

Let’s hope that common sense prevails.

Be safe.
